Sri Lanka cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara joined members of the Cricket Transformation Committee in a meeting with Sri Lanka Cricket-contracted women cricketers on Friday, where players received guidance on building successful careers both on and off the field, Newswire reported.
The session brought together players from the national team, the Sri Lanka ‘A’ squad and the Under-19 setup and was chaired by Cricket Transformation Committee Chairman Eran Wickramaratne.
Sangakkara, alongside former national captains Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny, addressed the players on the importance of teamwork, discipline and understanding individual roles within a team.
Wickramaratne praised the growth of women’s cricket in Sri Lanka, describing the recent Asia Cup triumph as “rewriting the history of women’s cricket in Sri Lanka.” He said the committee would work towards ensuring women’s cricket received the same level of attention, opportunities and support as the men’s game.
The meeting was also attended by Sri Lanka Cricket Honorary Secretary Prakash Schaffter, CEO Ashley De Silva, Women’s National Team Head Coach Jamie Siddons and other members of the Cricket Transformation Committee.
Wickramaratne conveyed his best wishes to the Sri Lanka women’s team ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, where Chamari Athapaththu’s squad will represent Sri Lanka in England later this month.
