A 56-year-old school teacher has been killed in a road accident involving a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus and a motorcycle in Poonewa on the Jaffna–Kandy main road, police said.
The accident occurred on Thursday morning when an SLTB bus travelling from Kandy to Vavuniya collided with a motorcycle being ridden by the teacher, Ada Derana reported. Following the collision, the female rider was reportedly run over by the rear wheel of the bus, causing her death at the scene.
The deceased has been identified as a teacher attached to Galkandegama Vidyalaya in Poonewa. Police said the body has been placed at the morgue of the Vavuniya Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The bus driver has been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigations are being conducted by Poonewa Police.
The crash adds to a pattern of fatal motorcycle collisions on the country’s main inter-provincial routes that have continued through the post-Avurudu period despite ongoing road-safety enforcement.
