India A teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed the fastest fifty in List A cricket history during the Tri-Nation Series final against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Sunday, reaching the landmark in just 11 balls before falling for a breathtaking 94 off 29 deliveries.
The 15-year-old left-hander reached his half-century in 11 balls — beating the previous List A record of 12 balls set by Sri Lanka’s Kaushalya Weeraratne back in the 2005-06 season. He also eclipsed the Indian record for the fastest List A fifty, which had been held by Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan with a 15-ball effort in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Sooryavanshi’s innings was studded with 10 fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 324.14. He was dismissed in the ninth over by Sri Lanka A off-spinner Sahan Arachchige, denying him a shot at the fastest List A century, a record currently held by Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk at 29 balls.
The teenager opened the innings after Sri Lanka A captain opted to bowl first in the title decider at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, and immediately attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers from ball one.
The performance came with extra weight because of the storyline running alongside it. Sooryavanshi had been at the centre of a heated tied league-stage match between the same two sides on June 15, when India A were docked 10 runs and the youngster shoved Sri Lankan A wicketkeeper Vishen Halambage. Both players were sanctioned by match officials over the Dambulla altercation, and Sooryavanshi’s league-phase form had been modest — 14 off 12 and 21 off 14 in two innings against Sri Lanka A and 44 off 22 and 38 off 28 against Afghanistan A.
The world-record knock in the final reframes the narrative. After persistent questioning of his temperament, Sooryavanshi delivered the most explosive innings of the Tri-Nation A Series jointly hosted by Sri Lanka, India and Afghanistan in Dambulla through June at the moment that mattered most.
The fall of the wicket left India A well placed in defence of a title shot they had won on net run rate after a tied finish in the league round-robin, with Arachchige’s dismissal the only real reprieve Sri Lanka A had carved out so far in the innings.
Update — June 21 evening: India A win Tri-Nation title by 66 runs
India A defeated Sri Lanka A by 66 runs at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium to clinch the Tri-Nation Series title, Ada Derana reported. Powered by Sooryavanshi’s 29-ball 94, captain Tilak Varma’s composed 67 off 90 balls and a late-overs flourish of 39 off 15 from Anukul Roy at number nine, India A posted 377 for 9 in 50 overs. India A were 209 for 2 at the halfway mark before Sri Lanka A’s spinners Ravindu Fernando (2/72) and Wanuja Sahan (2/39) pulled things back, and Tilak Varma also turned in a tidy 1/11 with the ball.
Chasing 378, Sri Lanka A were bowled out for 311 in 47.1 overs. Sadeera Samarawickrama struck 52 off 44 balls and Wanuja Sahan top-scored with 62 off 69, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Yash Thakur led the India A attack with 3/45 from seven overs and Vipraj Nigam returned 3/60 in 9.1 overs to wrap up the tail. The result handed India A the title at the end of a tournament jointly hosted by Sri Lanka, India and Afghanistan in Dambulla through June.
