Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Southern Expressway near the Sooriyawewa Interchange late on Thursday, police said.

A tipper truck struck the expressway’s safety fence, and a concrete mixer truck travelling behind then collided with the rear of the tipper, according to police. The tipper overturned in the impact.

The three injured were taken to Embilipitiya Base Hospital for treatment. Police were continuing investigations into the cause of the crash.

The Southern Expressway has logged a string of multi-vehicle crashes in recent weeks, including a 10-person pile-up in the Beliatta-Kasagala section earlier this month.
