Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for a four-year term following board elections held in Dhaka on Sunday.
Tamim, 37, who had been heading the BCB’s ad-hoc committee since April, was elected unopposed after securing a position on the newly constituted board of directors. He was subsequently endorsed as president at the board’s first meeting after the vote. Fahim Sinha was elected vice-president after receiving the highest number of votes among candidates for that post.
The election completed the formation of a 25-member board that will oversee Bangladesh cricket for the next four years. Tamim pledged to restore confidence in the governing body and promote greater transparency, expressing hope that the board could move beyond recent controversies and focus on developing the sport.
Tamim is among Bangladesh’s most decorated cricketers and retired from international cricket as the country’s all-time leading run-scorer in One-Day Internationals. His elevation from interim committee chair to elected president cements the leadership transition that began earlier this year.
The new BCB leadership takes office as Bangladesh’s bilateral and ICC fixtures schedule heats up, including the men’s Asian Games cricket clash with England that overlaps Sri Lanka’s August tour and women’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup matches starting June 12. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have a heavy bilateral calendar in white-ball cricket, with the women’s teams most recently meeting in the Sylhet T20I series.
