A total of 5,289 Tri Service personnel have been granted promotions to their next respective ranks in line with the 17th National War Heroes’ Commemoration Day, which falls on May 19, Newswire reported on Monday.
According to the government, the promotions were awarded in recognition of the personnel’s dedicated service to the nation, and were granted on the basis of recommendations made by the respective Service Commanders and in line with established administrative procedures of the Tri Forces.
The National War Heroes’ Commemoration Day is observed annually on May 19 to honour members of the Tri Forces and recognise their contribution towards restoring peace and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
The bulk-promotion notice precedes Tuesday’s main commemoration ceremony in Battaramulla, which is being attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The 17th observance also marks 17 years since the LTTE was defeated at Nandikadal on May 18, 2009.
