Trinity College Kandy has announced a donation of Rs. 3 billion from distinguished old boy and businessman Nahil Wijesuriya, describing it as a major contribution towards the institution’s future development.
Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara said in a statement on Tuesday that the college will establish a dedicated fund to ensure the prudent management and sustainable use of the donation, with the proceeds directed towards enhancing educational quality and student development. Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Trinity community, the Principal said the donation reflects confidence in the institution and its mission to shape future generations of Trinitians.
Wijesuriya is widely known for his philanthropic support of education in Sri Lanka and has previously contributed to a number of leading schools, including S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Ananda College and Bishops College Colombo, Newswire reported. The Rs. 3 billion contribution is the largest single-donor gift publicly announced by a Sri Lankan school in recent years.
Trinity College, founded in 1872, is one of the oldest secondary schools in Sri Lanka and a major sporting institution: its rugby First XV defeated Royal College 58-26 to clinch the President’s Trophy this year. The Wijesuriya gift will support academic-side capacity rather than competitive sport.
