A suspected associate of a major drug trafficker was arrested in Dummaladeniya, Wennappuwa, with police seizing narcotics estimated at a street value of Rs. 7.5 million.
The arrest was carried out by officers of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit. Further investigations are underway to trace the broader network connected to the suspect.
Part of Wider Avurudu Crackdown
The operation forms part of an intensified anti-drug sweep during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive period. Police had earlier reported 520 drug-related arrests in a single 24-hour operation targeting narcotics networks ahead of the holiday.
This is the second significant drug arrest linked to the Wennappuwa area in recent weeks. On April 7, police arrested an associate connected to a Dubai-based trafficker in the same region, suggesting the area remains a focal point for narcotics distribution networks.
Law enforcement agencies have maintained heightened vigilance throughout the festive season, with cross-jurisdiction raids and STF operations targeting organised drug networks across the country.
