Sri Lankan carrier FitsAir has suspended its Colombo–Dubai service, citing “the evolving global situation and its impact across the Middle East”, Hiru News reported.
The suspension took effect on September 6 and will remain in place while the airline monitors developments in the region. FitsAir expects to resume the route on 19 November 2026, subject to conditions at the time. The service operates as flights 8D821 and 8D822.
The airline said it understood the inconvenience to passengers and thanked them for their patience.
A long “temporary” halt
Described as temporary, the suspension runs more than ten weeks on the dates given — long enough to remove the route through the start of the winter travel season rather than to bridge a short closure. Hiru News does not report how many passengers are affected, whether they are being rebooked or refunded, or whether FitsAir’s other Middle East services are also affected.
The regional backdrop
The decision lands amid a sharp escalation. The United States struck five Iranian tankers off Jordan this week, and the Daily Mirror reported Brent crude rising above US$100 a barrel as the conflict widened.
Sri Lanka’s air links to the Gulf have been contracting for months. SriLankan Airlines suspended its Kuwait flights in July, Indian carriers have cut services over Hormuz-driven fuel costs, and Bandaranaike International Airport has recorded a roughly 30 percent slump in Middle East traffic. Jet fuel prices have risen steeply since airspace closures began.
The Gulf routes matter disproportionately to Sri Lanka because they carry migrant workers as well as tourists. FitsAir has been expanding elsewhere, launching three weekly Ahmedabad–Colombo flights in June as carriers pivot toward the Indian market.
Update (September 13): the Daily Mirror files the same suspension, four days on
The Daily Mirror published its own report of the suspension on Sunday evening, confirming every material detail independently: the halt took effect on September 6, 2026, the airline cited “the evolving situation in the Middle East region”, and it expects to resume Colombo–Dubai flights from November 19, 2026, subject to conditions in the region at the time.
The Daily Mirror adds that FitsAir “is closely monitoring developments in the region and assessing their impact on its flight operations”, and that the carrier expressed regret over the disruption to passengers. It does not name the flight numbers Hiru gave, and it supplies no new operational detail — the value of the filing is corroboration rather than fresh information.
Notably, the Daily Mirror reported the suspension a week after it took effect, and neither outlet explains the delay between the airline’s decision and its appearance in the mainstream press.
