Four schools in the Deniyaya Education Zone that were temporarily closed following a flu outbreak among students will reopen on Tuesday (13), Southern Province Education Secretary Nishantha Pathirana said.
The decision was taken at a discussion held on Monday (11) under the patronage of the Governor of the Southern Province. The schools were closed last Thursday after approximately 56 students contracted the illness.
Pathirana said a health-safe environment has since been established in the affected schools. Instructions have also been issued to pay close attention to hygiene practices, particularly regarding the use of water.
The reopening closes a thread that began with four schools shut as the illness spread, an Epidemiology Unit team being deployed and doctors initially suspecting viral meningitis. NewsFirst on May 11 linked the outbreak to unsafe water sources, consistent with the hygiene guidance issued for the reopening.
