The government has opened a public consultation to gather views and proposals for a new national policy framework on higher education, the Ministry of Higher Education said on Friday.
The initiative is being undertaken under the guidance of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, with a panel of experts currently drafting the proposed framework, the ministry said in a statement reported by Newswire.
Several rounds of consultations have already been held with stakeholders representing the education and higher education sectors to obtain recommendations and feedback. The ministry has now decided to seek public input to ensure broader participation in shaping the future direction of higher education in Sri Lanka.
An online questionnaire has been published at mohe.gov.lk/survey.html, allowing the public to submit views and proposals. The survey is also accessible through the Higher Education Division’s website at www.mohe.gov.lk and will form part of the consultation process leading to the final policy framework.
The ministry encouraged students, academics, education professionals and the general public to contribute their views as part of the policy formulation process.
The consultation appears to be the next stage of the higher-education overhaul the Prime Minister outlined in Parliament on May 7, when she said a special expert committee had been working for six months to prepare reform recommendations that would align the university sector with the school reforms already under way. Dr. Amarasuriya has framed the wider reform agenda — most recently in her Bishop Cyril Abeynayake Memorial Lecture on June 1 — as a response to deep structural pressures running from inequality through to AI disruption.
