A 65-year-old woman has died after being hit by a private bus on the Galle-Matara main road at Kapparathota, Weligama, Ada Derana reported on Sunday.
Police said the accident occurred while the woman was attempting to cross the road. The victim, a resident of Katuwana, Embilipitiya, was travelling with family members who had visited a relative’s house in Baddegama on Saturday and were returning to Embilipitiya at the time of the incident.
The group had stopped their motorcycles near Kapparathota before crossing the road towards the beach when the woman was struck by the bus. Weligama Police are conducting further investigations.
The fatality is the latest road death on the southern coastal corridor, where pedestrian-bus collisions remain a recurring hazard. A separate pedestrian-three-wheeler collision in Kosgoda earlier this month also killed a road-crosser, while last week saw a woman killed in a train accident near Wellawatte — underlining a sustained run of fatal incidents on Sri Lanka’s busiest transit arteries.
