The Department of Meteorology issued an Amber advisory on Sunday evening for strong winds across several provinces, citing an active south-west monsoonal condition over Sri Lanka.
The advisory was issued at 8:30 p.m. on June 14 and will remain in effect until 8:30 p.m. on June 15. Strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph can be expected at times over the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-central provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, the department said. Fairly strong winds of about 30 to 40 kmph can be expected at times elsewhere across the island.
The public has been requested to remain attentive to further advisories issued by the Met Department.
The Amber advisory continues a string of strong-wind warnings since the south-west monsoon intensified earlier this month. The Met Department issued similar Amber advisories on June 11 covering Central, Sabaragamuwa and Northern provinces, on June 10, on June 8 and earlier in the cycle on June 5. Earlier in the monsoon onset, the department also issued a Red sea-state advisory on June 12 — the first Red-tier escalation of the season — as wind activity off the southern and western coasts strengthened.
