The Department of Meteorology has issued a new Amber advisory for strong winds over the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-central provinces and the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, citing active south-west monsoonal conditions.
The advisory, issued on Friday, will remain in effect until 6.00 p.m. on Saturday (13). Winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times across the alerted areas, the department said, while fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times elsewhere on the island.
The public has been asked to remain attentive to further advisories from the department as monsoonal activity persists.
The latest alert extends a near-continuous Amber wind pattern that has held since early June, with the department issuing similar advisories on June 8, June 10 and June 11. The hill-country and northern belt remains the principal focus area of the current monsoon cycle.
